Chapter Eight

Adele had been reading the same paragraph for the last half hour.

It wasn’t her fault. Usually she loved nothing more than curling up with a good book…but that was when she was back home, cozied up in the corner of her couch, a fuzzy blanket over her lap, a hot cup of tea by her side.

That was paradise.

Her current spot on the creaky mattress of this dingy drifter hotel was about as far away from paradise as she could get. Every word, every cough, every groan drifted through the paper-thin walls. The ceiling shook and rattled with the footsteps from the floor above, and the light from the solitary bulb hanging from the center of the room was harsh and unforgiving. But those were just excuses. They weren’t the real reason she couldn’t concentrate.

The real reason was the man sitting across from her.

Bron had been in that chair for hours now, his back flat against the wall, his eyes glued to the pages in front of his face. Pages he didn’t seem to have any trouble turning.

She wished she had a sliver of his focus.

God knew, she’d started out well enough. She’d spent the morning plowing through one chapter after another…until sometime in the afternoon she made the mistake of looking up and noticing the rapt look on Bron’s face. At first she thought maybe he’d reached a particularly good spot, but no. Hours ticked by and his expression stayed exactly the same.

As the day wore on, Adele found it harder and harder not to glance up. Not get lost in her thoughts. Not to create fantasies in her mind. Fantasies that centered on the masculine angles of his face and the strength in his arms. Fantasies where he carried her through the wilds of the Realm and did all kinds of wonderful things to her in the woods.

Soon she was stealing glances more than she was reading, and she was doing a crap job at hiding it. By the time the sun set, Bron was already on to his second book, and she was still stuck somewhere in the middle of her first. Now she was having a hard time even pretending to care about the words in front of her.

Which was probably for the best. Why the hell had she consented to reading romance novels while stuck in a room with him anyway? No wonder she was having these wild fantasies. The same ones she’d worked so hard to push out before.

What she needed was a distraction. Maybe a little conversation. Anything to keep her mind off the salacious images the books had planted in her head.

She shut the book with a loud smack and set it down by her side. Bron didn’t even blink. He just kept on reading.

All right, she’d go with the direct approach.

“How was it?” she asked.

His head stayed down, but his green eyes lifted to meet hers. “How was what?”

“Your book.”

“Good,” he said, instantly turning his attention back to the page. “But I’m not done yet.
